Description:

“Anger” is an embroidered collage piece using layers of felt. This piece was the third created in my solo exhibition, “Last Serving Daughter”. This exhibition centered around my journey in overcoming generational traumas and my process becoming my family's newest Matriarch. This piece focused on overcoming the 5 stages of living grief. This piece is the visualization of a scene from the folk tale, “Snow, Glass, Apples”. A retelling of Snow White, from the Evil Queens perspective. In this tale, the roles are reversed, the Evil Queen is trying to protect her people from a demented Snow White. My favorite scene tells about the Evil Queen who steals the heart of Snow White and strings it above her bed with hawthorn berries and garlic. Both herbs are believed to hold protective and healing properties. She does this in hopes to heal Snow White's blackened heart with magic to bring her back to the light. I felt like this scene helped me understand the living grief phase of anger. Anger turns the heart black- if you let it get carried away and take over, there is no amount of magical herbs that can bring you back. A lot of people get stuck in the Anger stage of the living grief cycle because it’s easier to feel anger than to be uncomfortable in order to heal. I like to think my hawthorn berries and garlic (therapy and taking custody of my younger sibling) healed the blackened part of my heart.
